A day around Gyeongju

Today we spent the day checking out the sights of Gyeongju. We started at Yangdong Folk Village, a traditional yangban (upper class) village from the Joseon dynasty. The village was founded between 1433–1484 and in 2010 became a UNESCO world heritage site. There is a large primary school there but only several students attend. We had fish for lunch with 15 banchan!

Next we went to the Cheomseongdae Observatory, it’s the oldest surviving astronomical observatory in Asia and is one of South Korea’s national treasures.

Then we visited the royal tombs at Daereungwon Tumuli park. Our G Adventures’ CEO, Rob, explained that one of the tombs, Cheonmachong (formerly tomb number 155), had been used to conceal valuable artifacts!

We checked into our hotel, then went for the best meal of the trip, samgyeopsal (BBQ pork).
